Barbara J. Shoff, local author and genetic genealogist, will teach a class called “DNA and Genealogy.” The class will be repeated twice on Thursday, July 27, to better accommodate people’s schedules. The classes will take place in Bartlesville Public Library’s upstairs meeting room. The first session will be from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The second class will be from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Shoff will explain the basics of DNA testing as it applies to genealogical research. She will compare and contrast the DNA testing companies, such as AncestryDNA, 23andMe and Family Tree Finder. She will discuss the DNA testing process, what data one can expect to receive, and a brief overview of how that raw data can best be applied in researching the family tree, with a particular focus on GEDmatch. Shoff will also address the role of social media sites, such as WikiTree and Rootsweb World Connect, as genealogical aids.
Shoff finds applying DNA results in genealogy especially helpful for answering questions about adoption and helping verify ancestors when the paper trail is scant or provides conflicting information.
